Fleetwood pensioner ‘could have been killed’ after arsonists set fire to wrong house

Detectives believe the thugs did not mean to target the house of a woman in her 70s

A pensioner’s house was set on fire when arsonists struck at the wrong house.

The woman, in her 70s, was evacuated after the front of her house in Fleetwood was set alight .

Emergency services were called to the property, on Poulton Road, at around 9pm and believe the blaze was started deliberately.

Fire crews spent three hours tackling the fire which police say did not cause serious damage.

A joint investigation between police and the fire service is under way and a witness appeal has been launched

Det Ch Insp Lee Wilson from Lancashire Police said: “We were called last night to reports of a fire at an address where an elderly lady was at home alone.

Det Ch Insp Lee Wilson from Lancashire Police said: “We were called last night to reports of a fire at an address where an elderly lady was at home alone.

“Perhaps you were in the area at that time and saw something suspicious, or maybe you have information about who may be responsible. Whatever information you have we would urge you to get in touch straight away.

“We know this incident will have caused concern in the local community but at this time we believe it was a targeted attack and that there is no wider threat to the public.

“Our investigation has established that this was not the intended address for the attack and we will increase patrols in the area as a precaution and to offer reassurance to residents.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Two fire engines from Bispham and Fleetwood attended an incident on Poulton Road in Fleetwood. The fire involved the hallway of a domestic property. Firefighters used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel, one positive pressure ventilation fan, a door ram and lighting. Crews were in attendance for around three hours and 10 minutes.”
