These 30 fascinating photos show how Blackpool Illuminations have changed through the years

From the 1930s up to the present – let us know your favourite era for Blackpool’s famous lights

This week sees the annual switching on of Blackpool’s famous Illuminations.

The town’s lights return tonight Friday August 30 and will be lighting up the night sky for over four months until Monday January 5, 2025.

Alongside the tower and the famous golden mile, the light display is among Blackpool’s most famous attractions, drawing thousands of visitors to the seafront each year to catch a glimpse of the spectacular installations.

The event has taken place in Blackpool nearly every year since 1879, except for during the First World War, Second World War and post war austerity.

As usual the lights will be officially switched on by a celebrity guest, and this year it’s the turn of Spice Girl Mel B.

Over one million bulbs are lit along the 6.2 mile stretch, which also incorporates artwork and displays.

To celebrate, we’ve dug into the photo archives to see just how much Blackpool illuminations have changed through the years.
